⚠️ Asian BMI cutoffs are lower because Asians (including Indians) tend to have higher body fat % at the same BMI compared to Western populations.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated as:

BMI = Weight(kg) ÷ Height(m)²

For example: Weight 70kg, Height 170cm (1.70m): BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70)² = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2

BMI Limitations

  • Does not distinguish fat from muscle mass
  • Athletes may show high BMI despite being healthy
  • Does not account for age, gender, or ethnicity fully
  • For Indians, use Asian BMI cutoffs (shown above)
  • Consult a doctor for complete health assessment
  • Waist circumference is also important for health risk

FAQ

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
For Indians and other South Asians, a BMI of 18.5–22.9 is considered normal/healthy using Asian BMI standards. A BMI above 23 is overweight and above 25 is obese by Asian criteria. This is lower than Western WHO standards because Indians tend to have higher body fat at the same BMI.
How to calculate BMI manually?
BMI = Weight in kg ÷ (Height in meters)². Example: If you weigh 65 kg and are 165 cm (1.65 m) tall: BMI = 65 ÷ (1.65 × 1.65) = 65 ÷ 2.7225 = 23.9. This falls in the Normal/Overweight range by Asian standards.
What is ideal weight for my height?
Ideal weight range = BMI 18.5–24.9 × Height(m)². For a 170cm person: min = 18.5 × 2.89 = 53.5 kg, max = 24.9 × 2.89 = 71.9 kg. Our calculator shows this instantly for your height.
